    A static investigation of the thrust vectoring system of the F/A-18 high-alpha research vehicle

    A static (wind-off) test was conducted in the static test facility of the Langley 16-foot Transonic Tunnel to evaluate the vectoring capability and isolated nozzle performance of the proposed thrust vectoring system of the F/A-18 high alpha research vehicle (HARV). The thrust vectoring system consisted of three asymmetrically spaced vanes installed externally on a single test nozzle. Two nozzle configurations were tested: A maximum afterburner-power nozzle and a military-power nozzle. Vane size and vane actuation geometry were investigated, and an extensive matrix of vane deflection angles was tested. The nozzle pressure ratios ranged from two to six. The results indicate that the three vane system can successfully generate multiaxis (pitch and yaw) thrust vectoring. However, large resultant vector angles incurred large thrust losses. Resultant vector angles were always lower than the vane deflection angles. The maximum thrust vectoring angles achieved for the military-power nozzle were larger than the angles achieved for the maximum afterburner-power nozzle

    Multiple-Objective Analysis of Integrated Relief Distribution and Network Restoration in Post-Disaster Humanitarian Logistics - Hazus based South Carolina (SC) Case Study

    In this research, motivated by the 2004 Asian Tsunami, we focus on a large-scale supply network problem during a disaster, known as humanitarian logistics or supply disruption. This is an emerging research domain gaining recent attention from several research communities. While several works exist in the pre-disaster operations, there is a clear need for research in post-disaster operations. Thus, several issues arise during a post-disaster, such as relief supply distribution and network restoration, are integrated and studied through Operations Research techniques, inclusive of multiple-criteria programming, goal programming, metaheuristics, etc. The poster shows the Multiple-Objective Integrated Response and Recovery (MOIRR) model, which provides an equity- or fairness-based solution for constrained capacity, budget, and resource problems in post-disaster logistics management. Further, a designed experiment for this NP-hard problem is conducted to analyze important aspects of the integrated problem for both small- and large-sized networks: full vs. partial restoration and pooled vs. separate budgeting approaches. Finally, the model is applied to a Hazus-generated regional case study in South Carolina (SC) based on an earthquake scenario and efficient Pareto frontiers are generated to understand the trade-off between the objectives of interest

    Using airborne laser altimetry to improve river flood extents delineated from SAR data

    Flood extent maps derived from SAR images are a useful source of data for validating hydraulic models of river flood flow. The accuracy of such maps is reduced by a number of factors, including changes in returns from the water surface caused by different meteorological conditions and the presence of emergent vegetation. The paper describes how improved accuracy can be achieved by modifying an existing flood extent delineation algorithm to use airborne laser altimetry (LiDAR) as well as SAR data. The LiDAR data provide an additional constraint that waterline (land-water boundary) heights should vary smoothly along the flooded reach. The method was tested on a SAR image of a flood for which contemporaneous aerial photography existed, together with LiDAR data of the un-flooded reach. Waterline heights of the SAR flood extent conditioned on both SAR and LiDAR data matched the corresponding heights from the aerial photo waterline significantly more closely than those from the SAR flood extent conditioned only on SAR data

    Modelling and experimental investigation of carangiform locomotion for control

    We propose a model for planar carangiform swimming based on conservative equations for the interaction of a rigid body and an incompressible fluid. We account for the generation of thrust due to vortex shedding through controlled coupling terms. We investigate the correct form of this coupling experimentally with a robotic propulsor, comparing its observed behavior to that predicted by unsteady hydrodynamics. Our analysis of thrust generation by an oscillating hydrofoil allows us to characterize and evaluate certain families of gaits. Our final swimming model takes the form of a control-affine nonlinear system

    Robust Detection of Dynamic Community Structure in Networks

    We describe techniques for the robust detection of community structure in some classes of time-dependent networks. Specifically, we consider the use of statistical null models for facilitating the principled identification of structural modules in semi-decomposable systems. Null models play an important role both in the optimization of quality functions such as modularity and in the subsequent assessment of the statistical validity of identified community structure. We examine the sensitivity of such methods to model parameters and show how comparisons to null models can help identify system scales. By considering a large number of optimizations, we quantify the variance of network diagnostics over optimizations (`optimization variance') and over randomizations of network structure (`randomization variance'). Because the modularity quality function typically has a large number of nearly-degenerate local optima for networks constructed using real data, we develop a method to construct representative partitions that uses a null model to correct for statistical noise in sets of partitions. To illustrate our results, we employ ensembles of time-dependent networks extracted from both nonlinear oscillators and empirical neuroscience data.Comment: 18 pages, 11 figure
